Thank god for the long weekend, I was really starting to get annoyed with work lately and getting through eight hours was growing difficult. Hopefully Monday I'll be a little more rejuvenated - but no reason to think of that now! Without further ado...
We set off around 4pm and headed up the Jersey Turnpike toward DESTINY. We had about five and a half to six hours of driving to get under our belts before we could rest, and the first few went off without a hitch. We headed up through New York City and into Connecticut by the time we started getting hungry.
Dana hit up Yelp for New Haven and we found what was described as a great Peruvian eatery in "a bad neighborhood". When we got there, the neighborhood was maybe mid-tier Philadelphia fare or looked like something you might see in parts of South Jersey. You know, different standards to judge by, I suppose.
Anyway, we re-rolled our Yelp search and found a pizza place called Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana. After a decent wait (maybe 20 or so minutes) for a table, we sat down and ordered our tomato pies. Of course, I piled mine high with toppings while Dana opted for a bit more spartan pizza. It was excellent, some of the best pizza I've had outside of New York City.
'Za!
After eating, we had about two hours left in our drive, so we set off. As we neared Fitchburg, Massachusetts, the location of our hotel, things started getting a bit dark. After turning off the freeway, we were basically driving through a giant tree-tunnel. Fortunately the place was deserted, so I powered up the high-beams and we scooted on through. After running into a closed-off road (twice!), we figured out a way around to the hotel. The interim was really spooky, though - it was downpouring and extremely dark due to lack of lightposts, and Dana didn't help the situation by playing Boards of Canada to "fit the mood". Anyway, we eventually made it and our hotel (which I booked with 10,000 Marriott points rather than the $130 price tag!) fine.
Today we head toward the unknown Canadian wilderness via New Hampshire and Vermont. Our hotel has some bad reports on TripAdvisor, but with a little bed bug spray and a lot of gumption we should be perfectly fine.
